Getting to know an old enemy a bit better

There are lots of vegetables I didn't like when I was a kid. Like broccoli for example. I remember giving my mother a very hard time over some pieces of broccoli. The thing is, my mother gave up quite easily... OK, there were lots of vegetables I liked too, so it's not that I didn't eat my greens (spinach with bechamel sauce was my favourite meal for a long time).

When I moved out, I started eating all those vegetables I didn't like before, and all the vegetables and spices my mom didn't like. And I realized they were all very tasty! yum broccoli!

But Brussels sprouts were different because of a story with which my mother terrorized me. She told me that once she was eating some, and she opened one and it was full of worms. You probably think it's not big deal, but I hate HATE bugs of all types. I cannot be around them. Never. And that day I decided to never ever eat Brussels sprouts in my life.

And then I grew up.

No, seriously, I realized that at least I had to try again. And most importantly, I had to try not to boil them (I figured it wasn't the best way to find out if I like them or not...). And I saw some of you have roasted them so...

I mixed them with a bit of olive oil and a bit of maple syrup and a bit of cream of balsamic and to the oven they went!

I had them with salad. Awesome salad by the way!

And with a soy Schnitzel from Aldi (which I liked the first time but this time...meh...I don't know if I'll buy it again, it tasted too fake!)

And with shiitake pickles and savory vegan biscuits. OK, these were my first biscuits ever, and I know realize why it's usually covered with gravy. I've learned my lesson! They were very good, but they tasted a bit boring just plain.

So, are you waiting for a verdict? I mean... I ate them three times! that must be a good sign! Well, I'll tell you, I liked them. Yes, I like Brussels sprouts.

And I halved them all to avoid disgusting surprises!

We never had them growing up and so I just never tried them until last year. The farmers market had them and I was feeling experiment-aly (is that a word?). Anyway, I steamed some and stir fried some and loved them both ways. Now I'm looking forward to their return at the market. Mmmm. good!

haha I just HAD roasted brussels sprouts and posted it! Just like you I avoided it all for the longest time and now roasted brussels sprouts is a top fav.

Ooooh bechamel sauce, that sauce makes me eat more than I should. Evil sauce...well from back then.

Can you imagine...bechamel sauce on biscuits?

I used to HATE brussels too. I used to eat one on christmas day because mum made me and that's it. But seeing all the blog posts about roasted ones inspired me too and now i'm a lover as well!

Still can't stand my mum's boiled variety though. blech.

Hourrah for brussles sprouts conversion! I love them so much I could just eat roasted brussels sprouts like popcorn. That worm story did freak me out a little bit.

My mom always yells EWW when I make Brussels Sprouts but I think they are delicious!!!

I used to hate broccoli as well but now that I steam it or roast it I'm good. I just don't like the little "leaves" that fall off the "trees" when they're raw. In fact I think I've had steamed broccoli every night this week!

Yet another reason why I should try brussels sprouts again... that picture!! They look so good, I need to get over my BS fear too.

I saw Denise (aredcardigan) posted her roasted brussels sprouts today and I went to the store to buy a few. So I'm next in line to give them a go!

Hee hee - you don't have to say you halved them to look for critters. You halved them because they soak up the yummy roasting juice better and they cook more evenly. Yeah, that's it! The critter patrol is just an added benefit!

I still don't like brussels sprouts, but that's how I used to feel about mushrooms! And now I love them.

Thanks for the compliment but you know I just sit by the window and use a crappy camera. Don't let the white plate fool ya!

I just had another evil thought...hollandaise on biscuits.

You hate me now don't you? tee hee

I've never been that much into brussels sprouts, but those roasted ones look yummy! Maybe I'll also try making them soon and see if my tastes have changed!

What a story! I would be jaded and probably not want to eat brussels sprouts either. Thankfully, I have never experienced that one. I have, however, been greeted with worms in my organic corn (they make themselves known as you try to shuck it), or the occasional little bug in some freshly picked organic lettuce - I washed 'em really flippin' well!

Yum! I love roasted brussels sprouts, they're one of my favorite foods.

Brussel sprouts are awesome! I'm so glad you gave them a second chance... and a third... and a fourth... and a fifth!

Eewww, that worm story would gross me out too. I once knew a guy who found a dead rat inside a can of spinach and that ruined me on spinach for awhile. That was when I was a kid, but I later learned fresh spinach was a whole different, awesome world.

Glad you liked sprouts roasted! And yes, biscuits are best when smothered with gravy. But they're also good with vegan margarine. Or with jelly and vegan sausage.

I don't eat brussels sprouts often and I think it's because like you, i've tried them the wrong way. I'll have to roast them and give them another go!

I hated Brussels sprouts when I was a kid. And the worst thing was that my father never remembered it, so these little plants always went into the garbage bin after a Sunday's lunch.

i looooved brussels as a kid (i was a really weird child) - and i'm so happy that you love them now too, Alice! they're so good for you, and really quite tasty as well. roasted brussels are my favorites, and i halve them, too. good call on halving them to suss out any potential worms - ick! your salad looks great - and those mushrooms look rock'n as well! lots of yummies to accompany such a tasty veggie! rock on! i love it all!
